Moving preconditioning from bench to bedside.

چکیده
schemic preconditioning is the one maneuver that has onsistently been shown to reduce myocardial necrosis due o ischemia/reperfusion injury in experimental models (1). rief coronary occlusions of a few minutes to 10 min ollowed by brief reperfusion periods markedly reduce the ize of a subsequent myocardial infarction (MI) induced by longer coronary artery occlusion followed by reperfusion. he ability of ischemic preconditioning to reduce myocarial infarct size has been observed in every species in which he phenomenon has been tested. Ischemic preconditioning lso confers other benefits, including a reduction in lethal entricular arrhythmias (2). There is now ample evidence hat ischemic preconditioning can occur in the human heart 3). Studies of isolated cardiac myocytes and human cardiac uscle have shown that, in in vitro models that simulate schemia/reperfusion, preconditioning protocols can protect he compromised heart tissue. Promising role for Gc-MAF in cancer immunotherapy: from bench to bedside
Immunotherapy has been used for years in many types of cancer therapy. Recently, cancer immunotherapy has focused on mechanisms which can enhance the development of cell-mediated immunity. Anticancer medications are administered to inhibit immunosuppressive factors such as nagalase enzyme, which is produced by neoplastic cells and destroys macrophage activating factor (Gc-MAF). Anti-neoplastics...
متن کاملDevelopment of new levodopa treatment strategies in Parkinson’s disease—from bedside to bench to bedside
This review will illustrate the process of moving from an idea through preclinical research and Galenic developments into clinical investigations and finally to approval by regulatory agencies within the European Union. The two new treatment strategies described, levodopa/carbidopa intestinal gel and levodopa/carbidopa microtablets, for advanced Parkinson's disease, have been developed in colla...
متن کاملTranslational Antidote Research: A Bedside to Bench Tale
Although antidote development should proceed in an orderly fashion from observation, to experimental and safety studies, to clinical trials, this sequence is not always precisely followed. The development of fomepizole as an antidote for toxic alcohol and glycol poisoning is an example of how this may not be the case. Interest in the development of fomepizole was spurred in the 1960s. Shortly t...
متن کاملMoving toward a three-way intersection in translational research: a sociological perspective.
Conventionally, the definition of translational research describes a two-way process of translation from the "bench" to the "bedside" and the "bedside" to the "bench." In this article, however, I suggest that those at the bottom (i.e., the clinicians) are likely to pay more attention to what those at the top (i.e., the scientists) say than vice versa. I argue that the experience of the patient,...
متن کاملTranslational research for cardiovascular diseases at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute: moving from bench to bedside and from bedside to community.
Thanks to the dedicated involvement of the communities it serves, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) completed development of a scientific working strategic plan in 2007 to guide its activities and initiatives over the next 5 to 10 years.1 The plan outlines a cross-cutting approach that identifies areas in which the NHLBI is well positioned to make major contributions through...
